Meet Gift Kakande

Gift Kakande is a resilient, hardworking, and hopeful 13-year-old student currently in Primary Six. Growing up in a large family as the fifth-born among five sisters and five brothers, Gift's early life was marked by heartbreak when his mother separated from the family, leaving him to grow up without her nurture from a very young age.

Today, Gift stays under the loving care of his grandparents. His grandmother works tirelessly selling matooke in the local market to support the household, but the modest income from her small produce trade is barely enough to cover daily survival costs. Raising school fees and buying essential learning supplies -- such as exercise books, pens, and proper uniforms -- is a constant, overwhelming hurdle that threatens to interrupt Gift's education.

Despite the absence of his mother and the severe financial hardship at home, Gift remains deeply committed to his studies. Witnessing the struggles of his family and community has inspired him with a clear, selfless ambition: he wants to become a doctor so he can heal the sick and bring health and relief to those in need.
